Here I will start describing my linux experience. First of all I want to show you that it isn’t hard to install and use linux and even noob user can do it. OK, let’s get started.
Why UbuntuUbuntu is operating system based on Debian Linux. “Ubuntu” word takes origin from South Africans and means “humanity towards others”. Ubuntu provides an up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, with a strong focus on usability and ease-of-installation. Ubuntu installing package contains applications from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools. Ubuntu has huge active community and it is very popular in my county.
So I choose it for easy installation, usability and community, even if I would have problems with it, it is easy to find answer in internet.
There are two Ubuntu releases per year, using the year and month of the release as the version number. Each version has name. Current version of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) and the upcoming version 9.10 (Karmic Koala), is planned to be released on October 2009.

Ubuntu DerivativesI forgot to mention that there are several other operating systems which are derived from Ubuntu:
- Kubuntu – Ubuntu with the K Desktop Environment
- Edubuntu – Ubuntu for Education
- Ubuntu Server Edition – Ubuntu for Servers
- Xubuntu – Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop environment
- Ubuntu Studio – Designed for multimedia editing and creation
- Mythbuntu – Designed for creating a home theatre PC with MythTV
Let me describe some of them:
Kubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the KDE environment instead of GNOME. It is part of the Ubuntu project and uses the same underlying system. It is an exciting distribution that showcases the full potential of the KDE desktop. Kubuntu shares the same repositories as Ubuntu, and relies on the same underlying architecture.

Xubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the Xfce desktop environment. It is intended for users with less-powerful computers, or those that require a highly efficient desktop environment on faster systems. Xubuntu features primarily GNOME applications.

Install Xubuntu from UbuntuHere is note for my noob friend
If you have an existing Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Edubuntu installation, it is possible to install Xubuntu and retain your current installation. To do so, just go into Synaptic (or Adept if you use Kubuntu) and install the xubuntu-desktop package. Next time you login, you can choose Xfce4 from the Session menu on the login screen. If you want to have a default Xubuntu install but have installed Ubuntu or Kubuntu, you can remove all Gnome and KDE packages by following instructions on this page.
