On getting my iPhone one of the first things I did was to check out the App Store. After downloading over twenty different apps I then started searching words of things I was interested in. “Journalism”, “WordPress”, “Social Networking” and then “Pride and Prejudice”. What excited me was that I could now take my favourite Austen novel everywhere with me without having to lug around a whole book and without any cost to myself. There are a few free versions, although there are also plenty of ones you can pay for, and each boasts different features, layouts and themes. In total at the moment there are six free downloads of the novel (not including library apps that allow you to download within the application) and they are very different from each other.
As the iPhone is backlit it’s great to read in the dark or if you are in a dim car, and it’s just a great gizmo to get your hands on. So, I’ve read the first chapter of each, played around and checked out all the settings and reviews and figured I would write my findings below!
Note: I’ve included the full title of each, however all of them can be found simply by typing “Pride and Prejudice” into the search function of the App Store. The reviews below are also in the order found upon searching (and the order shown in the picture).
1) BeamItDown Software- Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice 1.3MB
App Store user rating: *** (and a half) stars
This is my favourite of all the versions. it’s very simple, has very practical options to alter the appearance and is a complete breeze to use. It doesn’t have a “turn page” option, instead it scrolls constantly down the screen to the end of the book. There is an auto-scroller, where you can tilt it to a certain point and it scrolls down for you and changes the speed depending on how much you tilt it (you can also alter the speed in settings) but I found this a little erratic, and even dizzying and I far preferred manually scrolling the screen.
I read Dracula using this reader, and found it a complete breeze. You can change the background colour, the font size, font style and colour and there is even a night mode. I had good fun changing the colours for red font and “blush” background to get me right in the Vampiric mood, however you can also choose some heavy contrasts for easy reading.
There’s a great contents option that shows you your *Curren Reading Position* however it’s pretty hard to gauge how far through a chapter you are, as there are no page numbers or percentage, and sometimes the chapters matching up to your reading position is a little bit inconsistent.
There is a simple double-click function to get in and out of the menu, and you can skip a whole screen-full of text by clicking at the bottom, which works better for someone who prefers to read block by block. It also saves your place the second you click out.
If you’re a leisurely reader, then I would recommend this app.
My rating: ****
2) Your Mobile Apps Inc.- Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen 606KB
App Store user rating: *** (and a half) stars
Although the menu icon you click to view the App is a bit skewed this application gives you a ton of basic options to choose from. There are more colour choices for changing the appearance of the app than the BeamItDown version, and it also has a night mode, however the interface is a bit more awkward- requiring you to return to the menu after every single chapter and click through to start reading again. Although this doesn’t seem like a huge problem, it’s actually a bit of a nightmare and ruins the momentum of the reading.
I find the menu system a little bit sterile and boring, and it was pretty boring with the names of the colours (come on- “Antique Parchment” sounds so much better than “Pale Goldenrod” or “Bisque”) but these are minor qualms really.
Other than that it is pretty similar to the BeamItDown version, works on a scrolling down basis (although it doesn’t have the auto-scroller, but it does allow you to put in bookmarks manually (and have a whole load of them- which can be a great study tool to save references) and also saves your place when you exit out abruptly.
If you’re studying this book and need to keep references, then I recommend this app.
My rating: ***
3) xCube Labs.- Pride and Prejudice:Glider Edition 1.5MB
App Store user rating: No Ratings
If you want a wealth of options, this app is the best out. However, sometimes less really is more- and this just proves it. What masquerades itself as the all-choices app actually is one of the most difficult to read. The icon is sticks on your menu is lovely, and suits the iPhone well however here all benefits stop. It DOES offer an auto-scroller, manual scroller, page turn option, side-slide page, ultimate control over layout (font, background, alignment, spacing, size, paragraph indenting etc), a sleep-mode, interface sounds, the ability to control your iPod music through the app, contrast and so on… but by the end I was left screaming “TOO MUCH!”.
It does have several functions I love: A search function (look up key terms in the book, it shows you in order all the references to that word, the chapter they fall in and so on. A fantastic (and smooth looking) contents system.
However it also has some stupid options: A “Social” option- allowing you to sync it to your facebook or twitter and say “Reading PRIDE AND PREJUDICE” (sample option) or similar- I think this is sort of pointless.
Yet some of these functions screw up. There is no where (that I can see) that allows you to change the colour of the font or the background, which is a standard option in most ereaders. The scrolling-page function stuffs up if you change your mind and decide to start turning the page (sometimes you get half sentences on the page). And the font spacing can be changed to stupid extremes (to the point where it is unreadable). The title page is also extremely boring.
While it said it was a “glider” version, I found myself clicking the wrong things all the time, struggling to get the menu, accidentally turning multiple pages at once and just generally blundering around the app.
If you need to find out how many times they say the word “Lizzy” in the book though, this is a fantastic tool and saves you a load of time.
So, if you are a bit of a control freak and love having a billion different gadgets to play with then this is probably the app for you.
My rating: **
4) KiwiTech- Pride and Prejudice (Classique) 4.9MB
App Store user rating: *** (and a half) stars
If you want something that gives you that “regency feel” and is most like a real book, then this application is beautiful. It works on a very realistic book-like basis- turn-page function only, has an old-style parchmentish background with swirly text. It also has a nice little “About the Book” page and shows you the page numbers constantly. It even shows an actual bookmark (complete with tassle) marking the page when you exit out or go to the menu, and then shows it again when you go back in to the application. The whole thing is designed to be elegant, but unfortunately falls a little short of it.
If you have only downloaded Pride and Prejudice then you are bombarded with ads at the beginning, meaning it takes a while to load into it. Some of the attempts at the “Classique” feel are a little over-the-top, including the attempt at an aged looking front cover, and the inclusion of a back cover. The contents page works well, and allows you to navigate at ease- but other than the page numbering there is no indication about how far through the book you are.
There are no extra options (which are the one thing that really gives an ebook an edge over the real thing) such as changing the layout or the colour theme, which is disappointing, and it doesn’t really bring anything fresh to the table- falling short of a real book in terms of getting that antique feel, and not quite reaching another ebook in terms of functionality.
Considering it’s a chunker of a download, I expected more.
This app is great for people who want a slightly more realistic reading experience, and who like reading “pretty” books.
My Rating: **
5) Publish This, LLC- Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice 3.3MB
App Store user rating: No rating
I actually quite like the SunScroll system. It works on a 3D page-turn appearance (meaning the words distort as you turn the page) and even has sound effects (although these are annoying). It’s very simple, and basically allows you to change the font colour and size, add bookmarks, and has this nice regular interface using suns (to show chapters and options). It also has a search function, but it’s a little less hi-tech than the Glider version and takes you to the first entry where you can click next-next-next etc.
The whole application is a bit glitchy, but I think it is nicer for children- being extremely simple to use, and not having any stupid options. There is a night reading option, and a couple of other extraneous ones, but these are pretty standard on most ereaders. The icon that it puts on your menu is also pretty yuck. It isn’t anything special, but it does what it is meant to do.
Choose this one if- you are getting a younger child to read it (under 15) or you aren’t particularly techy.
My rating: **
6) LoudReader Inc- Pride and Prejudice (by Jane Austen) 1.5MB
App Store user rating: *** stars
It might put a nice icon on your menu, but this app is difficult to use. It seems to labour over the smallest requests (changing chapters etc) and is made with little to no logic in mind. It’s hard to fiddle around with, and while it offers some cool background (including textures)it doesn’t offer anything extra than any other app.
It uses a scroll down function, but to switch chapters it turns the page. It’s nice to be able to skip through chapters easily (and you can look through a list of chapters as well) but it seems to struggle to switch the chapter. It does allow you to read in blocks (tap the screen in the top or the bottom quarter) but it’s a pretty average way of reading and doesn’t really do it particularly smoothly.
It’s far too easy to click the screen in the wrong place or the wrong number of times and end up on a different chapter, page and section. Little problems like these really make it difficult to bother with.
Admirable mentions: Pinching in and out to increase and decrease text size respectively, sideways phone view.
My rating: *
I have had this free App for a long time that is called Stanza. It’s fantastic- allowing you to get loads of original, creative commons and other books for free. It works on a really simple page-turn basis, and I absolutely adore the ease of reading with it. It shows a little pie-chart with how far through each book you are, gives you a percentage, tells you page numbers, allows you to change appearance, set night-viewing, has bookmarks, sideways phone view and everything. You can download several extremely similar versions of Pride and Prejudice through this app:
+ Feedbooks: Pride and Prejudice
Has a great front-cover image and a nice blurb about Austen.
This is very easy to read, has an easy flow, separates the chapters nicely and just reads like a novel.
Rating: ****
+Munseys: Pride and Prejudice
Doesn’t let you see the front cover that is the icon option. Has an extraneous list of contents (unclickable, no information, a bit pointless).
Simple, easy to read.
Rating: **
+ Project Gutenburg: Pride and Prejudice
Really simple, but it doesn’t have the cover-art and you don’t get to see the image that is on the icon.

Hey everyone! I know a lot of you want to make a movie for the Rexxy Awards, but can’t record it. Instead of having me record it, you can download frontcam and do it yourself. Here are the steps.
1. Go to http://download.cnet.com/
2. You must have Windows. Any other type does not work with frontcam.
3. Look up frontcam in the search bar
4. Download it
5. Find the frontcam icon
6. Learn the basics
7. Record!
8. Make a youtube account (not posting the steps for this)
9. Upload your video file
That’s it! Frontcam is really helpful to me. It is how I get pictures from my blog. Good luck! ~Hornstrkier

Dark Void Dark Void Full PC Game | Multi5 | Reloaded ISO
Dark Void delivers a ground flouting combination of fast paced vertical combat mixed with mid-air and on-foot action. Incredible is consuming our universe, a huge and ancient force approximately beyond our comprehension. Millions of years ago, the minions of that influence found their way to the 3rd planet of an average yellow star.
As innocent and ear pleasing melody of デッドボールP’s (デP/DeP) melody, his songs are full of very sexual innuendo. Very cleverly disguised as perfectly innocent subjects, this album will definitely bring a smile to anyone who appreciate the ingenuity, and definitely shock those bystanders that happens to hear you play this over the speaker and understands it. This album is obviously not for those that are underage. Listen at your own discretion.

by Posted by Philip SherburneWhen the Wighnomy Brothers announced that they’d be calling it quits at the end of 2009, it left a hollow feeling in many a clubber’s stomach: where would we go for their special brand of epic tag-team sessions? The good news, at least, is that separation doesn’t seem to be slowing the Brothers down. To the contrary, stepping out from Robag Wruhme’s shadow gives Monkey Maffia a chance to shine on his own.
An increase in the number of people downloading Fedora could also increase the number of new potential contributors.
In another refrain of the debate about whether defining a target audience for the default “Fedora Distribution” is a good idea or not, Mike McGrath made a good point–the Fedora download numbers over the past several releases are flat or declining.
My best understanding of the argument against setting a target audience goes like this, “If we set a target audience for the Fedora distribution, then we will marginalize or exclude the people who aren’t targeted.”
This creates an unnatural division and hamstrings us. Who would want to be responsible for marginalizing or excluding others? That certainly goes against my values.
This is an unfortunate way we approach a lot of conversations in Fedora–assuming there are only two ways to see a problem: right and wrong–IF followed by THEN with no exceptions or other possible outcomes. It is a false dichotomy. Chris Guillebeau has a great article defining the term this way:
Dichotomy is a five-dollar word that means the division into two mutually exclusive, opposed, or contradictory groups. False dichotomies are used to divide people who would not necessarily be divided otherwise.
There are some really thoughtful responses in the comments that echo a lot of my feelings about the limitations of our mailing list discussions and views towards change in Fedora.
Fedora Distribution
How do we know if our distribution is successful? Download numbers seem like a good start to me. If they are flat or declining should we do something about it? If yes, what should we do?
Fedora Contributors
How do we measure the success and health of our contributor community? Do we have indicators that show that it is declining and needs more attention than our distribution? What evidence do we have supporting this assertion? If a target audience would harm our contributors, by how much and in what tangible ways? Do we really have to trade alleged contributor exclusion for a target audience?
Tying it all together
We have download numbers showing that usage of the Fedora Distribution is stagnant. Some have advocated that the Board’s primary responsibility should be to empower contributors to do whatever they want and that defining a target audience would hinder that. The underlying assumption I hear is that the Fedora Board is leading the project off track.
I don’t understand this. Does the Fedora board really have a demonstrated history of making bad decisions and taking Fedora in the wrong direction? Why so much fear and worry that the board will do this now? Part of the problem I see is that we are still working through a paradigm change–some driven by board members like me who believe the Fedora Board has a responsibility to “lead into the future” while overseeing the present.
For as long as I can remember, the Fedora Project has been all about “enabling contributors to do whatever they want.” How has that turned out for us? Can we objectively say how good or bad the results are compared to what they might have been under a different approach? How do we objectively determine if “enabling contributors to do whatever they want” is a good strategy for long-term success?
There has been some work to measure contributor growth and health in Fedora. It would interesting to correlate that health and growth with the overall use of the Fedora distribution. What if we are simply creating a distribution for ourselves?
If defining a target audience for our default distribution and focusing our efforts increases the number of people actively downloading and using the Fedora it could also increase the number of potential new contributors. That seems like a win-win to me.
Dance gurus Groove Armada’s new album Black Light has made the internet rounds no so much as a leak, but because it was released in Australia approximately a month before its European date, which is really not a smart move considering Groove Armada are not that much of a mainstream act. The album is supposed to be a darker and heavier phase of Groove Armada. Click here to investigate the leak from another blog further.

It’s no secret I like to have electro-inspired, classic video game sounding noises floating through my eardrums. But more often than not, I find myself annoyed and put off by the slew of “electronic” artists bombarding the music world with their faux-arty haircuts and unoriginality. Needless to say, it’s always a nice surprise when I hear something that actually makes me feel good, not annoyed. Case in point: Golden Ages.
The musical project of a nameless man in Philadelphia, Golden Ages creates melodious electro-pop jams and infuses them with soul. The end result? Sounds that move slowly through your ear canal, find their way into your veins, and send your heart a-flutter. It’s a good feeling, let me tell ya.

Coda is ready to start a new year full of good stuff…. Confirm it yourself with our first reference in 2010 released by “our” favorite Polish techno producer, Navy b.
Four techno tracks, full of brillant melodies and strong beats. Techno born with “Slavic Blood”….
1 – Czwartek
2 – Rydel
3 – Plak
4 – Loud I am saying no!
Having now fully digested all of the happenings at Midem, the music industry’s annual trade event held in Cannes, we are all now in a better position to gauge the health of the music industry. The mood was a mix of pessimism and optimism, which is becoming ever more common at such events.
On one hand, Spotify has broken through the symbolic figure of 250,000 premium subscribers, and labels in Sweden at least are reaping the rewards of the Swedish service’s success. Digital sales have also helped power UK label Beggars to a US No. 1 album – the first in 25 years from any UK independent label – courtesy of indie band Vampire Weekend.
On the other hand, the growth of digital-music revenues is slowing, as it becomes clear that the a la carte offering will not come close to replacing the losses in physical sales that the recording industry has experienced. And several countries are still going down the route of disconnecting or suing users caught illegally sharing files, something that in this day and age seems woefully short-sighted.
Inevitably, there were a lot of well-worn cliches on display at the event, but they were punctuated by the occasional moment of real clarity. One of these was provided by Vincent Castaignet, CEO of French music-discovery service Musicovery. He said that “all music services are made by geeks, for geeks.” Although an amusing assessment, is he right?
Consider Last.fm. The site has done a lot of things right, and has more-or-less nailed the social aspect of the service, but simple it is not. The home page is crowded, it’s difficult to immediately grasp what all the different parts of the service do, and even getting to the music is not completely straightforward.
This isn’t necessarily a problem for Last.fm, which has always been a service for people who want to interact with their music. But other services that do profess to serve the mainstream have similar failings in simplicity. Apple has won plaudits for its hardware design, but iTunes and the iTunes Store frankly leave a lot to be desired. Transferring music from your computer to your iTunes library and to your device is nowhere near as simple as it should be. And Apple operates in so many different content verticals – TV shows, movies and, now, applications – that the iTunes storefront is a crowded beast indeed. Why has Apple not solved this problem? The simple answer is because it has not had to, and because iTunes has not been a high priority for the company (though its recent acquisition of Lala means this is likely to change).
TDC’s Play service, something of a child prodigy among music services, also falls into the trap. In under 18 months, it racked up 20 downloads for every man, woman and child in Denmark. But not every man, woman and child uses the service. Those that use it do so heavily, but TDC privately admits that it has struggled to get some of its users to sign up for the music offering.
There are several reasons for this. DRM on the service means that you cannot use it outside your house, unless you are a TDC mobile consumer. And its main problem, say many Danes, is that the user experience is not good. The service is cluttered, complicated and visually unappealing, they say, and people simply don’t like that.
The take-up rate for TDC Play shows that giving away music for free alone is not enough for many people. But a more fundamental question is whether people actually want free, unlimited music. The notion almost seems perverse. We live in an age of always-on broadband access and unlimited consumer choice. In this context, a service such as TDC Play should be a music-lover’s dream. And it is. But what about music likers?
Although many people are diving head-first into services such as TDC Play and Last.fm, many more still have fairly conservative music-listening and -buying habits. Radio is still a popular way of consuming content. “Best of” albums and compilations still sell extremely well. And a service such as TDC Play won’t necessarily appeal to music likers – those who enjoy music but for whom it is not a life-defining activity – particularly if the trade-off for having unlimited access to music is that they cannot take their music with them.
It’s clear that the next big challenge for the music industry should not be how to “solve” the problem of piracy, or even how to make the advertising/subscription/freemium/unlimited-download model work. It should be to come up with a product, offer or experience that addresses the needs of the music likers. At the moment, they are under-represented in the field of online music. Address this large group, and you have a very exciting prospect indeed.

The game begins as the titular Rhianna gets a phone call from her impatient and, frankly, rather nasty boss telling her she needs to fly to Rome to authenticate a rare find: a letter from Leonardo himself (the artist, not the ninja turtle). Rhianna would rather not, as her beloved husband disappeared there only a year ago, but the boss is having none of that. So, off she flies, authenticating the letter just in time to have it stolen right from under her nose, apparently by her lab assistant . Now the head of the Antiquities department thinks Rhianna herself set up the robbery, her hotel room has been plundered, and there’s lots more trouble afoot. What’s an antiquities expert to do? Especially as she begins to find clues that her husband was not, in fact, missing…
